Ending our New Mexico journey (for now), we were a little nervous, yet excited, to be able to take a week off from the trail. Taking a week off allowed more time for the snow to melt in the San Juan Mountains. We had read, heard and seen fellow hikers hit their rescue devices while attempting to conquer the San Juans with snow, turn back around on trail to avoid the snow, some even go back to their homes for multiple weeks, or even quit to avoid the snow closures all together. So this week off wasn't just something we wanted to do, but needed to do.
We were lucky enough to have the option to take this week off with some personal travel time and also having family in the area to hangout with! It was a fun week: traveling, good food and feeling so loved by family.
June 7th:
4:30AM: Walked 3 miles from our hostel in Grants, NM to the Shell Gas Station to hop on a Greyhound Bus to Albuquerque
Spent the day in Albuquerque!
- Breakfast
- Turquoise Museum
- Cumbre Brewing Company
4:30PM: Took a train from Albuquerque to Santa Fe, NM
June 7th - June 10th:
Spent 3 nights in Santa Fe, NM! We quickly fell in love with this city. We ate amazing food, shopped in the Old Town area, listened to some live music in the town square and enjoyed talking to locals.
June 10th:
Took a few different free/cheap city transportation to get to Chama, NM! Once we arrived, we got picked up by Ross' aunt who lives in Durango, CO (about 1.5 hours away from Chama).
June 10th-14th:
Hungout with Ross' family (Aunt Dawn, Cousin Layne & Brandon and their kiddos!!!). It was so nice to be around family, get some relaxation in and just talk about fun stuff other than the trail.
